The Feldenkrais Method

The Feldenkrais Method was developed by Moshe Feldenkrais. He was a distinguished scientist, an engineer and a Judo teacher and applied his knowledge from his study of physics, engineering, and martial arts to an intensive self-study of his own movement habits. He considered movement as an expression of feelings, thoughts, and attitudes. Moshe Feldenkrais began exploring the methods encouraging self-discipline in people.

The Feldenkrais method is a type of physical therapy consisting of exercises which stimulate healing processes, reduces muscle tension and chronic pains. They teach movement awareness in everyday life to be able to free ourselves from habitual patterns and learn some new ones. It is a process of organic learning, movement, using exact restricted movement patterns that can begin in our childhood.

The Feldenkrais Method includes two different techniques: Functional Integration® and Awareness Through Movement®. For the second technique a group of people is verbally guided through easy movements and learns to pay attention to details to be aware of senses and navigate their attention to what they do and how they move. They will be encouraged to make themselves aware of their habitual neuromuscular patterns and to realize what exercises are good or bad for them. They learn to feel the change through alternative movements. The lessons consist of easy movements that gradually evolve into movements of greater range and complexity to move more freely, with greater ease and flexibility.

The Functional Integration is an individual lesson with a “hands-on” aspect. Specific skilled manipulation and passive movements will be used. You are fully clothed and the practitioner supports you to feel your movements and guides you to learn your everyday movements and change them to improve the body’s comfort and function.

The Feldenkrais Method supports your particular needs and concern. It can help to reduce shoulder or neck pain, back pain, headache and chronic tension. It can also help people with a variety of problems and disabilities. People of all ages, conditions, and levels of fitness can benefit. It would be very useful for musicians, dancer and sportsmen as the movements reduce stress and it is ideal for both mental and physical performance.
